SFLHCC Leaders Stand Up for Critical Health Care Tax Credits

At a recent press conference, the President and Chair-elect of the South Florida Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (SFLHCC) spoke out against the potential expiration of Premium Tax Credits for Marketplace health plans. This move could endanger health coverage for families and small businesses throughout South Florida.

These tax credits are a lifeline in Miami-Dade County and across the region. Since 2021, Marketplace coverage nationwide has doubled from about 12 million to more than 24 million, with Florida leading the way due to our large Hispanic population. The median Marketplace enrollee is 36 years old, bilingual, earns about $40,000, and often supports an extended family. Nearly 7 million enrollees nationwide are Hispanic, a 177% increase since 2022, making up one in three Marketplace participants.

Thanks mainly to these tax credits, the uninsured rate among Hispanic Americans has been cut in half. In Miami-Dade alone, more than 1 million residents rely on these credits; across Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties, about 1.89 million people benefit. Moreover, enhanced tax credits lowered the average monthly premium from $618 to just $46, putting quality coverage within reach.

For many small businesses in our area, especially those powered by Hispanic entrepreneurs, affordable health coverage is essential to keeping teams healthy and doors open. Analysts warn that if these credits expire, nearly half of Hispanic employees at small firms could lose their coverage. This would force many families to delay care, creating a ripple effect of higher emergency room use and adding strain on hospitals and local businesses.

South Florida thrives when our people are healthy and insured. As your Chamber of Commerce, we are committed to fighting for policies that keep our community strong. Let’s work together to ensure families and businesses receive the support and coverage they need to succeed.
